Beta – A Tale of the afterlife

I mainly read non-fiction, however I’ve been reading the following book: Sum: Tales from the Afterlives. The book describes 40 possible afterlives as a series of short essays.

I decided to have a pop at writing an afterlife of my own in the style of the book.

Here is my effort..

Beta

The afterlife shouldn’t have needed to exist. It exists as a solution to the issues remaining when the universe shipped. The universe was launched while it was still in beta-test, and it was not a very good beta at that. All of the little annoyances that we, as universe entities, take for granted or accept as “that’s life”-situations should never occur. Cancer, rain falling during the daytime, murderous intentions, 3 buses coming at once and death itself are all manifestations of programmatic errors introduced during the millennia-long crunch leading up to the big bang launch. These issues were only noticed once the universe was too mature and life in vast areas of it had reached a level of complexity deemed too advanced to re-launch.

The programmers wanted to try and address each of the issues directly but this was deemed much too risky and expensive. So the concept of an afterlife was introduced. The universe was patched with an afterlife to catch all the entities as they were lost from the universe, and provide them with an alternative existence. The afterlife is a slightly improved version of the life from which the entities have just exited but is essentially the same, with galaxies, planets, governments and rain.

As with most patches it has its flaws. It too was hurried through quickly to stem the massive losses which were occurring on a daily basis. Many entities still drop through the net provided by the afterlife and are lost completely. Of course the inhabitants of the afterlife are unaware of this situation. This is one element of the coding which was both robust and tested thoroughly: A universe entity will never evolve the capabilities to discover the true nature of its surroundings. This requirement still remains intact. During the transition to the afterlife all of the inhabitant’s memories of their previous life are completely erased.

So if we were aware of the situation in which we find ourselves, to whom would we direct our grievances? The being that we would call God: who conceived and instigated this vast feat of software engineering? Well he left a long time prior to launch due to an ongoing disagreement over certain design decisions and decided to pursue other interests. Development continues on afterlife 2.0.
